MS Windows
Printing System
(Alt-V to view graphic)
by Tony Curro
Microsoft has released a product that was long overdue. Windows
Printing System (WPS) is an excellent add-on for anyone using
Windows and a HP LaserJet printer. It will work on the following HP
models: II, IID, IIP, IIP+, III, IID OR IIIP. The reason it will
ONLY work with these printers is that it comes with a cartridge.
The program comes with dual media and a cartridge that must be
inserted into a font cartridge slot of your printer. The cartridge
must always remain in. The software includes the installation, and
79 MS TrueType Fonts (from MS TT Font Pack & MS HP Font Set). The
drivers for WPS require 2600KB, SoundFiles use 356KB and TrueType
Fonts require 4928KB. Sound files, you ask? Yes! WPS supports any
sound card, and generates sounds to let you know what is happening.
Of course it will work without a sound card, although you will not
hear anything.
WPS is a full graphical environment that allows you to control your
printer with point-and-click simplicity. You then watch -- and hear
-- the events as they occur. Watch paper being fed, in the replica
of your printer on screen, and hear "Printing Started," "Printing
Finished" or even "Paper Jam." If you forget to insert paper, or run
out, WPS will alert you also. Also shown, on screen, is the time it
will take to finish your printing job.
Without going to Control Panel, and by using the Printer Setup
options from you application, you have complete control over
changing orientation or paper size (letter or envelope). Control and
verify your printer's paper source and choose formatting options
such as: print resolution, collating copies and informative header
or trailer pages (to separate multiple jobs). There are options for
two-sided printing; options for three halftone settings, combined
with brightness and contrast settings to give you precise controls
for enhancing images in your documents.
For Duplex printing, WPS can print an easy-to-follow instruction
sheet before printing begins. Then, after the first side is printed,
the Status window shows you how to reinsert the page. This applies
to all printers mentioned, except for the D series, which already
has duplex printing capabilities.
If you run into a problem, the Status window opens automatically.
For example, if you run out of paper, the window shows you which
tray needs paper. You will also hear about it. Same applies if you
are low on toner, or get a paper jam. Printing a test sheet from
time to time, will show you how many pages you have printed and
other useful information.
WPS offers dynamic two-way communication; your computer and printer
can talk to each other. If you use a network, WPS will still print
faster, but you will not have control over the options stated above.
When you open a DOS application from Windows, and then print, WPS
recognizes that the request came from a non-Windows application, and
it automatically switches to PCL mode. The same applies if you are
using WordPerfect for Windows with the WP driver.
Using the scaling option in the Options dialog box, you can reduce
the printed image to one-tenth its original size or enlarge the
image to four times it original size.
WPS supports: Artisoft LANtastic 4.1, Banyan Vines 5.0, MS LAN
Manager 2.0 & 2.1, MS Windows for Workgroups 3.1, Novell Netware 2.2
& 3.11 and Novell Netware Lite 1.1.
I have already mentioned this product to several readers, and a
couple have already purchased it. I highly recommend this product to
any Windows user.
